Fitness trends on campus: The Football Club

Football, also called association football or soccer, is a game involving two teams of 11 players who try to maneuver the ball into the other team’s goal without using their hands or arms. The team that scores more goals wins. Football is the world’s most popular ball game in number of participants and spectators. Of course, everyone knows that–but did you know that Seattle Central has its very own football club?

Led by President Jean, Seattle Central’s Football Club embodies a passion for the sport and a commitment to fostering fitness, enjoyment, and skill development among its members. With regular practices at the Mitchell Activity Center (MAC) and participation in leagues beyond campus borders, the club provides an inclusive platform for students to engage in football, whether they’re seasoned players or newcomers looking to hone their skills.

Seattle Central’s Football Club, under Jean’s leadership, welcomes anyone who likes the sport or wants to polish their skills. The club believes in fitness through practicing the sport, as it’s like hitting three birds with one stone–fitness, enjoyment, and skill development. They practice at the MAC and participate in leagues outside campus.

What is a regular football club session like?

“A typical session with the football club involves gathering and setting up nets on the multi-use field,” states Jean. “After which, we organize ourselves into teams, usually consisting of five to seven players per side, depending on the number of participants. The atmosphere is casual yet energetic as we engage in pickup games, focusing on enjoyment and skill development. These sessions provide a great opportunity for members to practice their techniques, improve their teamwork, and stay active in a fun and social environment.”

Their primary location is the MAC, where they regularly gather for training sessions and pickup games. Additionally, they also utilize Cal Anderson Park and Rain City soccer club for practices, sometimes participating in leagues held there. Jean states, “These facilities provide us with the resources and environment needed to hone our skills, build teamwork, and enjoy the sport to the fullest.”

Jean emphasizes, “I believe sports are really important as they help us create communities. I’ve played football all my life and met many of my very close friends while on the pitch. You can learn many skills. Quick reflexes, fast decision taking, stamina, coordination, strength. On the mental side, team play, coordination with other people, trust. Players learn to communicate effectively, collaborate with teammates, and rely on each other’s strengths, leading to enhanced self-confidence and interpersonal relationships.”

Last quarter’s football tournament with all three campuses was a success. Jean is looking forward to organizing more events like that one. He states, “Perhaps we can even get more schools involved or make it bigger. Our goal is to create memorable experiences and opportunities for personal and collective growth through the sport we love.”

In the dynamic realm of fitness trends at Seattle Central, the Football Club stands out as a beacon of camaraderie, skill-building, and healthy competition. As students gather on the field, they not only sharpen their physical abilities but also cultivate lasting friendships, have enriching experiences, and demonstrate how the love of the game can transform both the body and spirit through the Football Club.
