Breaking news update: Seattle schools aren’t shutting down?!

Guess who’s back–back again.

In my previous article, I mentioned that four elementary schools in Seattle were shutting down. However, within the last 24 hours, Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones, who is in charge of the kindergarten through 12th-grade school system, has officially scrapped the plan. Now, no schools are closing.

The superintendent has decided to cancel the school closures after significant protests from children and parents, who pushed to keep the schools open and active. The schools also saw an uptick in enrollment after the plan to shut them down was announced.

According to KUOW, they stated, “Without preschoolers and Running Start, enrollment is at 49,240 students this year—up by just 14 students from the year before.” They added, “Either way, the last enrollment figures show an increase of less than 1% in Washington’s largest public school system.” These numbers indicate that parents and their children still care about these schools and are happy that they aren’t closing after all.

If you are curious why the closures went from four schools to none, the initial plan–driven by budget cuts–originally proposed closing 21 schools under Plan A, or 17 schools under Plan B. Both plans involved a lot of schools, including the four schools mentioned in my previous article.

So, if you were nervous about the closure and worried about the schools that you hoped would stay open, take a breath and ease some stress from your busy schedule.
