Emerald City Comic Con review: Closing this year’s chapter

Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) has officially wrapped up in Seattle, and it was a weekend to remember! From different cosplays to all the nerdy fun, there were many things to enjoy and to look forward to next year.

Many panels and nerdy fan experiences took place from March 6–9, with both the Arch and Summit buildings of the convention center buzzing with excitement as fans of all kinds came together to celebrate fandoms in Washington.

The show floor and Artist Alley are always the main highlights of the convention. Talented artists and creators used this space to showcase their merchandise and attract customers to their booths.

One of the booths that I wanted to highlight was Nerdwax Candle Co.—a Filipina and queer-owned nerdy candle company that started during the pandemic. They create candle scents inspired by Studio Ghibli movies such as “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” along with a plethora of other fandoms.

Saturday, March 8, was the busiest day, with heavy foot traffic and many fan meetups dispersed throughout the day. Highlights included an “Avatar: The Last Airbender” meetup, a panel featuring authors such as Cassandra Clare, and celebrity appearances including John Boyega. Attendees had the chance to not only get photo ops but also meet and get autographs from the celebrities attending the con.

The Tavern, located in the Summit building, offered the perfect spot to hang out, play Dungeons and Dragons, and shop for your next renaissance faire, all while enjoying the lively performance by Earl the Bard. You also had the chance to watch the performance of Jacques Ze Whipper and Ses Carney, a comedy duo who have done a lot of renaissance faires, and who were here all four days at the con.

Sunday, March 9, was the final day of ECCC, and it was a more relaxed day since it marked the last day of the convention. The day followed a familiar routine, with meetups, amazing cosplays, and all the excitement from the nerdy community, leaving everyone’s hearts elated with joy.

If you plan on going to ECCC next year, it will be held March 5–8. Now is a good time to start planning next year’s cosplays or figuring out the itinerary for what you want to do.
