Fitness trends on campus: Walking Club

This may come as a surprise, but walking has roots as a competitive sport dating back to the late 19th century. It also carries a wide range of health benefits—and yes, Seattle Central has its own Walking Club.

The Walking Club at Central champions the belief in fostering a community united by a shared love for walking, recognizing the many physical and mental benefits this simple yet impactful activity can provide. Led by Songmei Hu, the club emphasizes walking not only as a form of exercise but also as a gateway to better cardiovascular health, stress reduction, and social connection.

“There are lots of benefits in the activity. cardiovascular health, weight management, and simply relaxing are some benefits,” said Songmei Hu, the club’s vice president. “However, while walking helps reduce stress and ease our minds, I don’t think that only walking is enough for a person. If you want to improve your muscles’ strength, you must do some exercises like lifting, push-ups, and squats.”

The club’s goal is to promote physical activity, health, and community engagement through regular group walks. “We aim to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where members of all fitness levels can come together to enjoy the benefits of walking, such as improved cardiovascular health, stress reduction, and social connection. The club strives to encourage lifelong habits and enhance the overall well-being of our members,” Hu added.

The group highlights a variety of benefits, including enhancing metabolism, reducing anxiety, and building a sense of community. In addition, walking is a social activity that helps build friendships and support networks, while also offering a chance to explore local nature and attractions.

When it comes to what’s special for this year, Hu says, “We will collaborate with other clubs and go out together, on hikes, nature walks, and other venues.”
