Unity Fair Seeks Volunteers and Participants

Seattle Central’s College Activities Board has been ramping up preparations for the college’s annual celebration of student participation and diversity. This year’s Unity Fair will be held on May 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Unity Fair is a collaborative project made possible by the Associated Student Council and many different clubs and organizations around campus. However, the event is seeking student volunteers to help everything run smoothly. Volunteers can help with setting the event up, transitioning between different activities and performances and taking everything down at the end of the day. If you’re looking for an opportunity to get more involved and have free time between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 24 contact the College Activities Board at seattlecentralcas@gmail.com to volunteer!

For those looking to attend the event, Unity Fair will offer a wide range of activities. A multicultural fashion show will entertain with a unique mix of styles from all around the globe while acknowledging the incredible diversity of Seattle Central’s student body. Other nods to Seattle Central’s cultural diversity include a Bollywood Dance Group performing at 3 p.m. and a 12 p.m. panel discussion on the benefits of being bilingual.

Diversity is about more than where a person is from, to truly celebrate student diversity we must acknowledge the different talents and interests of Seattle Central’s population. One way Unity Fair will do this is by showcasing the music department. The Seattle Central All Stars will perform at noon, accompanied faculty member Brian Kirk’s band Good Company.

Of course, there’s no better way to celebrate Seattle Central’s students than by getting to know them. Plenty of games, including limbo, musical chairs and a watermelon eating contest, will provide an opportunity for students to connect with each other. Students can also share their artistic talents by participating in an on-the-spot art contest. Unity Fair will provide canvases and paint for any student with the creativity to make art and enter the contest. Less spontaneous artists can also submit work now to the 2018 Student Invitational Exhibition. Pieces chosen for the show will be on display at Unity Fair.

Besides cultural activities and games, Unity Fair will also boast plenty of food. Clubs of all kinds will be at the event looking to talk to prospective new members and sell a wide variety of foodstuff.

Whatever your background or your reason for attending SCC, Unity Fair will have something for you!
