Seattle Pride in the Park brings “Galactic Love” to the community

LGBTQ+ community members and allies gathered at Volunteer park Saturday, Jun. 3 to kick off the 49th annual Pride in the Park.

This year’s chosen theme, “Galactic Love”, was crafted by Seattle Pride and sponsored by business partnerships to help fund the celebration. The free event kicked off at 12 p.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. Pride-goers were welcomed by a slew of activities, corporate-sponsored tents giving out prizes, and age-appropriate entertainment (not including the 21+ area sponsored by Supernova).

Celebrating queer joy and the creatives who came together to spark the importance of self-expression, the event was nothing short of enlightening, providing a reminder that the LGBTQ+ community continues to stand strong, along with allies, in proud existence. Drag queens Versace Doll, Macy Marcs, and Cookie Couture brought all age-appropriate entertainment to the “Mothership” mainstage. Before the queens took the stage, they were preceded by Black trans/queer poet J Mase III, musician Brittnay Davis, and more.

The Supernova “Space Station” stage had drag queens Monday Mourning and Solana Solstice, accompanied by DJs and dancers, to bring more musical entertainment to its 21+ crowd.

In between all the activities and performances, the message displayed throughout community members was the the importance of queer existence. Individuals, young and old, felt the energy as the day went on. At one point during the performances, Versace rallied the crowd with momentous energy, celebrating the recent overturning of the “Drag Ban” in Tennessee. Not only a major win for drag artists, but the freedom of expression for the LGBTQ+ community as well.

Accommodations like low sensory tents, American Sign Language interpreters on stages, and accessibility for other individuals helped provide inclusivity. This marks one of many events being put on by Seattle Pride. To find out more about upcoming events, go to seattlepride.org/events.
