A walk through Honk! Fest West in Columbia City

HONK! Fest West is a free, community-driven music festival held annually in public spaces across Seattle. Honk! Fest West can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Honk! The festival has been around for over two decades, beginning in 2008. According to the Honk! Website, the festival became federally recognised as a 501(c) non-profit in 2021, officially known as Honk Festival West (no exclamation point).

Live music is a core of Seattle’s identity, from small venues like the Skylark to grand events like last weekend’s Honk! Fest. On Friday, there seemed to be thousands of people out. On Saturday in Columbia City, hundreds of people showed up to enjoy the music, clap to the beat, and sing along. Sunday was the last day for this year’s event, but Honk! Fest will be back.

A CNMC started off with a slow creep (literally weaving through the crowd and back to the center), transitioning to covers of energetic songs like “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin.

A member of CNMC plays the saxophone. Saxophones use reeds, thin pieces of wood, while sousaphones, trombones, trumpets, and cornets use metal conical mouthpieces.
